My Story

Ron Huneycutt got started in music at an early age taking piano lessons at just 6 years old. Showing a deep musicality he played several instruments until at age 14 he held a guitar for the first time and he immediately excelled at the instrument. Upon graduating from high school he was accepted to the music school at Florida International University to study classical guitar under the renowned Cuban concert guitarist Carlos Molina. His experience studying in a classical music department and performing on stage in various ensembles and in solo would turn out to become an integral part of his future career in piano technology.

After graduating with a B.A. in music performance from Florida International University Ron worked at a piano store in Miami. It was here that the seeds of becoming a technician were planted. Just as the store’s two technicians announced that they were both moving out of town Ron spotted an ad that change his life. “Learn piano tuning at home.” The idea quickly bloomed into a career path. Ron sought his initial training through the venerable Randy Potter School of Piano Technology graduating with highest honors. While the schooling from the Potter courses are quite thorough, it was a chance encounter with world class technician Paul Bruno that elevated his abilities to the concert stage.

“One day while working at the piano store where I was training, Paul Bruno R.P.T., the head technician from the University Of Miami walked in. His daughter worked at a shop next door and had asked Paul to wait for her as she finished her shift. Into the piano store he came, not letting on that he was a piano technician. We hit it off right away. We’re both bass players, both left handed. But it was when I mentioned that I was starting out as a piano technician that his eyes opened wide.

The University had recently given Paul the go ahead to hire a part time assistant and in his eyes I was the perfect candidate. He hired me on the spot. I worked with Paul for 7 years. He showed me advanced tuning and voicing techniques and really elevated my level. Paul helped me understand what working on a concert stage with the best pianists really means. I’m forever grateful to him.”

Through Paul Bruno’s influence Ron was introduced to another world class technician, Karl Roeder and in 2005 Karl recommend that Ron take over his duties at the New World Symphony, founded by famed conductor pianist Michael Tilson Thomas.  In 2012 Ron sat for the Piano Technician’s Guild “Registered Piano Technician” test at the PTG National Convention in Seattle, WA. which is a grueling 15 hour examination and passed with a 96% averaged score. Ron’s work at the New World Symphony has afforded him the opportunity to train with three of the Yamaha Artist Services Master Technicians: Yoshie Suzuki, Nori Soga, and Atsushi “Ace” Ugai. In 2016 Ron was selected as a member of Yamaha’s Premium Piano Service Network which included a 3 day technical workshop taught by master technician “Ace” Ugai at the Yamaha U.S. headquarters in Los Angeles.

Over his career Ron has been selected for the top concert organizations in Miami such as the Chopin Foundation, the Florida Grand Opera, the Dranoff Foundation and Competition, Mainly Mozart, the Bach Society, and Friends of Chamber Music as well as being selected for the Breckenridge Music Festival in Breckenridge Colorado.
